





Aka (ah-kah) - basic red (there are a number of words for red - just as in English - red,
cardinal, crimson, scarlet - are all forms of red...)
Asagi (ah-sah-gee) - koi with a blue back, some red on its "cheeks," pectoral fins, and flanks
Beni (ben-ee) - a deep solid red
Budo (boo-doh) - grape, purple
Cha (chah) - brown, tea
Doitsu (dwah-tsoo) - scaleless, or row of large scales. Can be on any breed of Koi
Gin (gen) - silver
Gin-rin (gen-rin) - diamond scales with a sparkly silver deposit on them.
Godan (go-dan) - five-step pattern
Goshiki (go-she-key) - a five colored koi - white, red, black, dark blue, and light blue
Hajiro (hah-jeer-oh) - a black koi with a white nose, and white at the tips of its fins
Hariwake (hair-a-walk-e) - a platinum koi with orange, yellow, or gold markings
Hi (he) - general term for red
Hikari (hee-kah-ree) - shiny, metallic luster
Kage (kah-gay) - shadow, undeveloped black
Karasu (kah-rah-soo) - means "crow." A term used to describe a completely black koi.
Ki (kee) - yellow
Kin (ken) - golden
Kiwa (kee-wah) - the edges of the patten on a koi
Kohaku (koh-hah-koo) - a white koi with red markings
Koi (coy) - fancy colored Japanese carp
Koi kichi (coy-kee-chee) - literally means a person who is "koi crazy"
Koromo (koh-roh-moh) - red color on the fish is overlaid with blue or black edging.
Kuchieni (koo-chee-ben-ee) - "lipstick" fish with red markings on its lips - giving it the
appearance of wearing lipstick.
Kumonryu (koo-mohn-roo) - black doitsu koi with a bit of white on its head, fins, and body.
Magoi (mah-goy) - a wild type of black carp, an ancestor of the modern koi
Matsuba (ma-tsue-bah) - net-like pattern on scales
Mesu (me-soo) - female
Midori (me-dohr-e) -green
Motoguro (moh-toh-gur-oh) - the black markings on the base of the pectoral fins
Nindan (nee-dan) - two distinct markings, two-step pattern.
Nisai (nee-sigh) - two-year old koi
Ochiba (oh-chee-buh) - a grayish koi with a brown pattern
Ogon (o-gone) - a shiny koi of a single color
Orenji (ohr-in-jee) - orange
Osu (oh-soo) - male koi
Rin (ren) - scales
Sandan (san-dawn) - three distinct markings, three-step pattern
Sanke (sahn-kee) - white koi with red and black markings
Sansai (san-sigh) - three-year old koi
Shiro (sheer-o) - white
Shiro utsuri (sheer-o-oot-sir-ee) - black koi with white markings.
Showa (sho-wah) - black koi with red and white markings
Shusui (shoo-swee) - an asagi without scales
Sumi (soo-mee) - black
Tancho (tahn-choh)- a koi with a single red circular spot on its head
Tategoi (tah-tay-goy) - a young koi with potential for excellent future development.
